Terrestrial Forum/Horizons of Change – Call for participation

When? August 22-27, 2023

Where? Požega (small town in Western Serbia)

The Ministry of Space collective (Belgrade) is organizing the second edition of the Terrestrial Forum/Horizons of Change, a school of political education with over 30 lecturers and over 100 participants.

Over the course of five days, we will learn, discuss and reflect upon wider range of current topics. The three main modules will tackle the following:

1) Just energy transition – We want to explore various socio-economic implications of ongoing energy transition and discuss effects different measures have or could have in the countries in the region. How to strike a balance between the urgency of undergoing (yet another) transition and an imperative that transition does not expand inequalities?

2) Deliberative democracy in practice – We are examining the potential of diverse deliberative democratic tools, such as deliberative mini-publics, citizens’ assemblies and plenums, to effectively address the democratic deficit in our societies, by looking into various implementing experiences from the region and beyond, both in institutional and non-institutional settings.

3) Political economy of urban development – We are looking into analysis of micro- and macro-economical processes that influence the spatial practices today – how cities are expanding, who gets access to basic infrastructure and services and what are limitations of different political efforts to change all that.

Aside from the modules, afternoon sessions will address a range of equally hot and interesting topics through either lecture, workshop or panel format – from societal implications of AI development, public-common partnerships, feminist perspective of urban development, etc.

Applications for the Terrestrial Forum are open to activists, professionals, scholars, media workers coming from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Croatia, Slovenia, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Romania, Greece and Hungary.

For everyone participating, we cover travel costs, accommodation and meals for the five days of the school. The number of participants is unfortunately limited.

To sense the atmosphere and get insight into the program, here are some recording from the 2021 edition. If you have any additional questions, you can reach us at info@ministarstvoprostora.org
