ABOUT THE PROJECT

Folklore meets multiculturality in the fourth edition of the very successful project “Folklore For the Future”. Now with the name “Dancing our Roots”.

Youngsters from different countries and cultures of Europe will meet once again this summer in Cortes de la Frontera to exchange cultural, dance and folklore lessons, learn from each other, express themselves and show us the richness of their countries’ traditions.

We are using folklore, dance, singing, and traditions to build bridges among cultures and prevent violence and discrimination against minorities in our communities, foster intercultural dialogue, and involve the local people to this fascinating exploration.

The project will lead to a series of folklore spectacles that will show the audience once again the richness of cultures in Europe, the beauty of mingling and getting to know each other, discovering similarities and exploring differences with admiration instead of fear for the unknown.

AIM OF THE PROJECT

“Dancing our Roots” aims to create a form of spectacle where people become active and they explore, show, analyze and transform the reality in which they are living. This project serves as a platform for cultural exchange, inviting participant to embark on an adventure of discovery.

By expressing themselves and each participants’ native folklore stories, rhythms and dances, we want to create unique and new experiences, friendships and world views for the participant’s and audiences alike.

By introducing to people how beautiful and diverse other cultures are, we aim to cultivate empathy, foster mutual respect, and promote a more interconnected global community. Which also allows participants to express their creativity and grow in a more artistic manner.

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD & TRAVELLING

Cortes de la Frontera is a traditional Andalusian white village, located between the Alcornocales Natural Park and Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park in the western reaches of Malaga province. The village is located on the mountains and is overlooking the Guadiaro with a spectacular backdrop of the Serranía de Ronda mountains.

The landscape around it consists of extensive forests of cork trees (alcornocales) that stretch from the Guadiaro river westwards, to where the municipal boundary meets Cadiz province, and beyond. Cork has contributed greatly to the local economy since the late 17th century and Cortes used to be one of the richest Pueblos Blancos (white villages) due to cork production. Evidence of this wealth can still be seen today in the grand 18th-century mansions lining the main street.

The village of Cortes de la Frontera currently has a population of around 4,500 and is located at 623m.

The participants will be accommodated in Enclave Social, a youth complex of bungalows that is surrounded by nature. There will be 3 meals per day in a restaurant right next to the accommodation venue and two coffee breaks.
